Pupils at Hartford Infant and Preschool School and Hartford Junior School in Huntingdon were delighted to give a generous selection of groceries to a local charity that supports young adults.
As part of their Harvest festival celebrations, the children gathered a wide range of provisions, such as pasta, tinned food and rice.
The Hartford pupils’ donations will go, via the Salvation Army, to Kings Ripton Court in Huntingdon to help their work with young adults.
Kings Ripton Court provides person-centred, holistic support, with up to two years self-catering accommodation, for young adults aged 16 to 25.
As part of the Harvest celebrations, Hartford Infant and Junior School, part of The Cam Academy Trust, was delighted to welcome Rev Geoff Boucher and Rev Steph Pedlar from All Saints Church in Hartford.
The clergy gave a school assembly about spoke to the children about the importance of seeds and how they grow into different fruits and vegetables. The children had the opportunity to name different grown foods, to find out if they grow below or above the soil and make a rainbow collage from vegetable prints in HIPS and in HJS make the tallest tower using wheat products e.g shreddies, shredded wheat and Weetabix.
Harvest Festival is a time-honoured tradition that marks the gathering of crops and the sharing of produce; it is a time for communities to reflect on the importance of food, the work that goes into growing it and the need to support those who may not have enough.
Rae Lee, Headteacher at Hartford Infant and Preschool and Hartford Junior School, said: “Our Harvest Festival celebration was great fun and we were delighted to welcome Revs Boucher and Pedlar from All Saints Church to talk to us about the importance of team work [building the wheat towers] and how we are like a rainbow in our uniqueness [printing].
“Harvest is a time when we can teach the children about the importance of kindness and generosity and the value of supporting those in our community who may be struggling.
“It was heart-warming to see the generosity of our pupils and their families this year and I would like to thank them for helping our school to support Kings Ripton Court.”
